It is over 30 years since the last Huey took off from the roof of the American embassy with all those harrowing scenes of desperate people trying to get aboard. Since then Viet Nam disappeared behind a bamboo curtain under a strict Maoist regime. But just like China they have begun to emerge and little by little the ideology is being discarded. A sure sign that there will be no turning back from a capitalist path is the proliferation of golf courses. So we have put together a tour of South Vietnam that takes in the best of them whilst giving you a view of one of the last bastions of communism in the world. We start the tour with 5 nights in Saigon where we will play at Viet Nam CC and Long Than. We will visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels where the Viet Cong hid underground emerging to deliver devastating attacks only to disappear as quickly. On the Free Day you can take a trip down the Saigon River to Vung Tao and have lunch on the beach or play golf there or just go shopping. We then fly to the beautiful mountain city of Dalat for four nights. The cool climate will be a welcome relief from Saigon and the Sofitel a welcoming host. The golf course is superb as are the restaurants. The market town is full of colour and gives a real insight to a city untouched by war. From there we travel down to the coast at Phan Thiet. This Nick Faldo links course is right next to the beach at our Hotel. A tough course for the final 2 rounds but a massage right after will make you quickly forget. Just 10 mins away is the beach resort of Mui Ne with its dozens of little resort hotels and bars and restaurants. We will have a nightly shuttle there so you can run through the cocktail card for a tenner and not worry about the drive home. Viet Nam is just a couple of hundred miles from Thailand but it might be on another continent. The food is superb and the people very friendly but 30 years of communism have left them behind and there is a tremendous desire to catch up. The country still sports the red flags everywhere and the scars of the old communist smoke stack industries are everywhere. This is a fascinating insight to a fast disappearing world. In a few years Viet Nam will resemble any other oriental country, but right now it is all motorcycles and conical hats and red flags. Be prepared to have your eyes widened.
